IATF 16949:2016 is a company-level certification developed by the International Automotive Task Force. It is based on the standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), titled "Quality management systems - Particular requirements for the application of ISO 9001:2015 for automotive production and relevant service part organizations." Not a stand-alone standard, IATF 16949:2016 is intended to complement ISO 9001:2015.

This edition was published as a separate document by IATF and will replace ISO 16949:2009. Revisions include new safety requirements as well as new requirements for products with embedded software and corporate responsibility, greater product traceability requirements, a NTF (no trouble found) warranty management process, and clarification of existing sub-tier supplier management and development requirements.

Companies wishing to become certified must be on an automotive customer's potential supplier list before beginning the certification process. Certification is issued by third party certifying bodies that have been contracted by the IATF; a list of these certifying bodies is available on the IATF site.
