ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 Certification Definition
ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 is a company level certification based on a standard developed by the Electrostatic Discharge Association (ESDA) titled "Protection of Electrical and Electronic Parts, Assemblies and Equipment (Excluding Electrically Initiated Explosive Devices)". This standard gives guidelines and test methods on controlling electrostatic discharge during the handling of electrical and electronic parts; organizations will be evaluated against this standard in order to become ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 certified.
This certification is for companies that design, manufacture, package, test and/or handle electronic devices or equipment sensitive to electrostatic discharge. This standard gives guidance for facilities to develop, carry out and sustain an ESD control program, including specific requirements related to training of employees that handle the electric/electronic devices, electrical grounding for persons handling electric/electronic devices and the packaging and marking of products.
Certifications are issued by third party, ISO9000-certified certifying bodies, authorized by ESDA; a complete list of these bodies is available on the esda.org website. For an organization to maintain ANSI/ESD S20.20-2007 certification, they will undergo annual audits where their compliance with the standard is evaluated by the certifying body.
