RC14001:2008 Certification Definition
RC14001:2008 is a company level certification based on a standard that includes all of the requirements of ISO 14001:2004 as well as the requirements of the Responsible Care code. The American Chemistry Council developed an Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) performance improvement initiative. This standard revises the RC14001:2005 to include enhancements on product stewardship issues, more efficient placement of outreach and dialogue requirements and additional requirements under operational control activities.
This certification is appropriate for chemical manufacturing companies. Also, organizations in the chemical, petroleum and allied industries would be appropriate candidates for this certification.
Certifications are issued by third party certifying bodies. Generally, the certifying body will do an initial assessment that includes a site visit and documentation review. Once the assessment is complete and if the assessor recommends the organization for registration, a certificate will be issued. Annual or regularly scheduled assessments will then be conducted to verify continued compliance.
