The National Institute of Standards and Technology was established by congress to improve U.S. industrial infrastructure and competitiveness in 1901. As a part of the Department of Commerce, NIST is a physical science and measurement standards laboratory that provides industry, academia, and government with standard reference materials and federal employees and their contractors with security standards.
NIST 800-171
NIST 800-171 is a document published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology titled "Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Nonfederal Systems and Organizations." This standard is intended for any non-federal agency with Department of Defense contracts and access to CUI as well as any of their subcontractors. To become compliant, contractors must adhere to a number of security objectives including but not limited to awareness and training, audit and accountability, identification and authentication, and security assessment.
